Kody is Dancing Again!
Like so many others, Kody's dream came true at Fresh Start School.
Kody sang and danced his way through life until challenges arose in his traditional school setting.
Now, at Fresh Start School, he is dancing again!
The following is a heartwarming testimonial from the parents of Fresh Start School student Kody.
The other day Marie and I asked Kody, “What do you like about the Fresh Start School?” Without hesitation he replied, “It is a place where I have lifelong friends”.
It is that sense of belonging combined with the expertise of a multi-disciplinary staff that creates a safe place for our son and his peers to academically learn and develop essential skills that enable those with autism the opportunity to live their best life.
When in a traditional school setting our son’s symptoms of autism were often mislabeled and interpreted as conduct issues that were then addressed with a punitive approach. As parents our efforts to partner with the school were dismissed.
Kody went from a boy that would frequently dance and sing throughout his day to a boy that became motionless and silent. On one occasion Kody’s Miracle League baseball coach asked us what was wrong with Kody as it was noticed that he no longer danced around the field. It was as though life was sucked out of him.
Kody entered Fresh Start in December of 2022. On day one the team was able to meet Kody where he was and embrace him with compassion and acceptance.
Beyond their expert understanding of autism, the team of staff assessed and developed thoughtful strength-based interventions designed to meet Kody’s needs. As parents we felt like partners in the process and felt that same sense of belonging and community.
Over the past year, family members, neighbors and friends have acknowledged a significant change in Kody’s wellbeing.
He is smiling more, enjoying his activities such as baseball and bird watching. He has hopes and dreams to become a Zookeeper. We have all had the privilege to see Kody dance again.
The Fresh Start School has brought our son back to life!
